Getting New Market traders

Over the last twelve months NMTF have been promoting their First Pitch campaign accompanied by an NMTF 400 and an NMTF First. The results of the First Pitch campaign are currently being assessed and we will be hearing at the NABMA conference of the lessons that have been learnt. Alongside the work being done by the NMTF, we are intending to publish examples of good practice used by NABMA members to attract new traders. Given the encouragement of Mark Prisk, BIS Small Business Minister, at the recent APPMG meeting it is important that the markets industry combines the resources of both NMTF and NABMA members to produce a national framework for getting new traders. This is particularly important given the Government’s emphasis on regional initiatives and following a preliminary meeting with NMTF officers, we hope to use NABMA’s conference as a stepping stone for the two organisations to work together on this important project.

Nabma's New Website

This was launched on 4 July and it is a big improvement on the previous website. There is an interactive forum for debate and discussion on market issues, daily update on topical issues via the Chief Executive’s announcements and a Twitter account. No doubt it will take a little time to get accustomed to the new facilities but it is important that members do engage in an effective way with the new website particularly the interactive forum. If anyone has any issues please let me know.

Research on Retail Markets

We have had a fantastic response to the survey with the exception of London where only a handful of market operators have responded. The initial results from the survey show a sharper decline in market halls than open markets and over 40% of outdoor markets showing a decline on last year. NABMA has engaged a research assistant to analyse in detail the results and one or two members have asked for details of regional variations. If you would like results covering your particular area of the country, please contact the office.

"Spotlight on Markets"

The detailed programme for the conference will be published next week and we really want to get more bookings before the end of July. The current offer is fantastic value but if you can’t stay with us for the full conference, please have a look at the programme and see whether you can come as a day delegate on one or both of the days.

Blachere Markets Awards

The first nominations for Market Officer of the Year, Market Team and Market Innovation have been received at the NABMA office, but we still need many more to demonstrate the skill and professionalism of the people running our markets. You have until 16 August to submit your nominations.
